Simply brilliant Helen. The perfect lightning photo, apart from a decent funnel cloud lowerring from the cloudbase, this photo couldnt possibly be improved.
The city lights add scale to this image really well.

so very dimensional. You can see the level of clouds, the horizon, the water and the reflections. I love the color! I am always trying to photograph lightening, what settings did you use. I really love this photo. You have captured it so perfectly, you can feel the electricity!

wow great work Helen! i was gutted yesterday as there was meant to be a meteor shower so it was time to get the 15 second exposure going…...but i fell asleep! lol
(i was also told that it was too cloudy so not too disappointed)

Thankyou everyone, ever so much. The settings I used for this particular shot were as follows:

Focal length: 70mm, f-stop: f/9, ISO100.

The lower you can keep your ISO, the less chance of noise in the longer exposures.

This was one of those one-in-a-million nights. I got 131 lightning shots and of those at least 100 were “keepers.” A stormchaser’s dream come true. You can find the rest of the night’s photos along with other lightning photos and weather phenomena at my website: Osprey Photography

this is by far one of the best pictures i’ve ever seen. A storm happened in San Marcos, California the other day and i was unable to get a picture but we had lighting like that. It wasn’t in a group of three but it looked similar. I love storms! great job

Holy wow…

When Mother Nature puts on a Show, she does it in spectaular style. I love the detail in this – the glassy sea in the middle, the horizon, the “walking carrot” strike on the left, the city lights to give it scale, the glow surrounding each part of the strikes, and the highlights on the clouds where the lightning strikes. The cloud ceiling is so soft-looking, yet it produces such wild magnificance as this.

This is a superb shotof an awesome natural event. Congratulation on having it on the Home Page.
