The Miracle of the Snow Geese Migration by

Featured in Vibration in Art and Verse~VAvoom, in The World Wildlife Photography Group, in Colour and Light, in The Beauty of Nature, and in The Birds

Every year thousands upon thousands of Snow Geese migrate from the Arctic to more southern climes, including the estuary of the Fraser River in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. As I write this, I am told there are presently 23,000 snow geese in the region. I have been trying to capture the magnitude of the migration, and how many birds one sees. I also wanted my viewers to be able to see what an individual snow goose looks like. I opted for this image, which I hope captures some of both. On this day, I was using my Nikon D700 and f4 600 mm lens with a 1.4 teleconverter (ISO 1000, f5.6, 0 EV, 1/800).

If I could live my life to live over, I would be a biologist because nature provides me with such joy and passion. I am able to capture and share my experiences in nature with good camera gear, and through the medium of RedBubble. I hope you enjoy my work capturing scenes from nature.

Excellent capture David. I just can imagine the noise.

  • Yes, it is very noisy. I estimated this particular flock at 5,000 birds or even more. Thank you, Anthony.

Flight controllers are just a little overwhelmed I believe!! Landing is just a little confusing.

  • You are so right, and I am sure there are collisions, but the birds are very cautious, too. Thank you for your comment.
