Osprey: The Great Fish Eating Raptor by

Featured in Birds of Prey

This magnificent bird, sometimes called a fish eagle because it only eats fish, and dives spectacularly into the water to capture its prey with its strong talons, fishes fresh water lakes and salt water bays and inlets around the world. Although widely distributed throughout the world, they can be difficult to find, and harder still to photograph. I am fortunate to see this bird fairly often on my visits to Pender Island, near Vancouver and Victoria, Canada, where this image was captured on a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1:4 teleconverter mounted on a Gitzo monopod using these settings: ISO 1000, EV -0.33, WB manual, aperture f5.6, shutter speed 1/1000 s.

If I could live my life to live over, I would be a biologist because nature provides me with such joy and passion. I am able to capture and share my experiences in nature with good camera gear, and through the medium of RedBubble. I hope you enjoy my work capturing scenes from nature.

Wow it is just a lovely bird, marvelous shot as well. ;-) I’d get dizzy trying to shoot one of these in action!!

  • I get dizzy too! LOL. I have a huge challenge tracking him/her (I still don’t know how to sex them), and have missed some great shots. My goal is capture this bird at the moment it pulls a fish from the water. Thank you so much, and I agree they are lovely birds.

Nice shot … looks like a male … the males are smaller and have a less pronounced ‘necklace’!

  • Oh thank you for that. I am not able to distinguish male from female. Your comment helps.
