Ornithologists regard the crow as the most intelligent bird on earth, yet it is not such a well regarded bird by photographers. While seeking more exotic images one day in south west British Columbia, Canada (Surrey), I watched crows find, and break open clams on the beach. The crow in this image found the clam, picked it up, flew over some rocks, and dropped it from a distance to break the shell. In the image, she is feasting on the delicate meat of the clam, while holding it with her left foot.
I captured this image using a Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter, mounted on a Gitzo monopod (ISO 500, EV 0, WB manual, f5.6, 1/1000 s.)
