Well not really playing. Actually, after killing the little fish by bashing its head against the steel piling, this female belted kingfisher is tossing the little fish (probably salmon) to position it for swallowing. This is all very nimble and skilful. During a 3 hour period that I watched her, some of it from a great distance, she repeated this scene several times, indicating that she is well fed. This photo was shot at the Campbell River estuary on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens, and Nikon 1.4 teleconverter (ISO 800, -0.67 EV, f5.6, 1/1250s).
