Great Blue Heron In The Salt Marsh by

Featured in A Vision of Flight and in 300+ Go Long!

The water is a mix of salt and fresh water, creating a very interesting environment for Great Blue Herons. I watched this bird for some time, as it fed on very small fish. I loved the bird against the marsh grasses when it decided to move on. The reflection in the tidal pool was definitely a bonus. The image was captured at Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a Gitzo monopod.

If I could live my life to live over, I would be a biologist because nature provides me with such joy and passion. I am able to capture and share my experiences in nature with good camera gear, and through the medium of RedBubble. I hope you enjoy my work capturing scenes from nature.

fantastic image David. I love these birds and a 600mm lens would make shooting them a LITTLE easier.

  • Thank you, Tallow. Yes, the 600 makes all this possible.

outstanding capture! Whenever I see one of these, my camera is not with me! Or it takes off before I can get a good shot!

  • They are not easy to photograph. Luckily my biggest lens gives me the edge that I don’t need to be so close. Thank you, Michelle, and good luck shooting Great Blue Herons!

My mom says she sees a lot of herons on her lake, so I should just spend some time there and may eventually get a good shot!

  • Yes, spend time there with your biggest lens, and snap away. The more shots you take, the more likely you are to get a good one or two. Good luck, Michelle, and thank you again.
