This is a rare bird, a beautiful bird. When I photographed her, she was alone, a long distance from others of her kind. She is the first recorded visitor of her kind to Vancouver Island, and I had the good fortune to see her and to capture this image near Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. She is a Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) common in the boreal forests around the globe, but a long ways from the boreal forest of British Columbia.
