Great Blue Heron In The Salt Marsh
The water is a mix of salt and fresh water, creating a very interesting environment for Great Blue Herons. I watched this bird for some time, as it fed on very small fish. I loved the bird against the marsh grasses when it decided to move on. The reflection in the tidal pool was definitely a bonus. The image was captured at Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a Gitzo monopod.

Tallow
fantastic image David. I love these birds and a 600mm lens would make shooting them a LITTLE easier.
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Tallow. Yes, the 600 makes all this possible.

outstanding capture! Whenever I see one of these, my camera is not with me! Or it takes off before I can get a good shot!
David Friederich replied
They are not easy to photograph. Luckily my biggest lens gives me the edge that I don’t need to be so close. Thank you, Michelle, and good luck shooting Great Blue Herons!

My mom says she sees a lot of herons on her lake, so I should just spend some time there and may eventually get a good shot!
David Friederich replied
Yes, spend time there with your biggest lens, and snap away. The more shots you take, the more likely you are to get a good one or two. Good luck, Michelle, and thank you again.

Great shot, David, as we have come to expect.
I was fortunate last week to be VERY close to a Heron which kindly posed beautifully as my tolerant friend smiled indulgently while I snapped away.

David Clark
really very nice—the setting is perfect – has the feel of a painting – dave
David Friederich replied
Yes, Dave, I agree. The background and lighting were perfect to take advantage of bringing out a painterly effect in this image. At some point, I may experiment with further developing the effect. I just acquired Painter 11, but the learning curve looks steep, so it may take awhile before I start that project. Thank you, Dave.
