A Killdeer

A Killdeer

A wetlands area I frequently visit to enjoy nature, and often to capture beautiful photographic images, was the source of this image. This 25 cm. shorebird has a heroic behaviour trait that appeals to me, and I am sure it will to you too.

Wikipedia says (look for the trait I am referring to):

These birds forage for food in fields, mudflats, and shores, usually by sight. They mainly eat insects.

Their name comes from their frequently heard call. These birds will frequently use the “broken-wing act” to distract predators from their nests. This involves the bird walking away from its nesting area holding its wing in a position that simulates an injury and then flapping around on the ground emitting a distress call. The predators then think they have easy prey and are attracted to this seemingly injured bird and away from the nest. If the parent sees that a potential predator is not following them, they will move closer and get louder until they get the attention of the predator.

Just beautiful and a wonderful close up. Just wish I could get close up shots this clear. Tremendous shot. Great work as always David.

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you for the comment, Jay. Getting clear shots in nature photography is always a challenge. I took at least 50 shots of this bird, most of which were not even acceptable images for me. You replied before I finished this upload. Check out the video and the sound clip. Thanks again, Jay.

Love, integrity and loads of bravery this little critter has for the nest. Very impressive indeed.
A tweeter of a shot David!!

  • David Friederich replied

Isn’t that a great video displaying the bravery of this little bird to protect its young. This was a fairly easy image to capture, because the bird came to me, to distract me from where ever the young were. It worked! Thank you Von. I love being on your watchlist.

Sorry I was too quick, but I couldn’t resist replying right away.
I have now seen and listened to this little fellow and I must say he sounds as beautiful as he looks, but he is a very sly little bird. Cheating with that broken wing act LOL. What a beauty. Thank you again David for the finale of this one. Just amazing.

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you so much, Jay. I had a lot of fun doing this, and I hope others will appreciate my efforts as you have.

Thank you, Blair. I didn’t know about the broken wing act until I researched this bird. I love the call too.

I haven’t had chance yet but many of the plovers act in this way & I’ve been fortunate enough to see parent birds fool predators by the broken wing act.

  • David Friederich replied

You are fortunate, Jesika. I would love to witness a plover fooling a predator with the broken wing act.

lol you one uped me again lol! I’ve been unsuccessful in capturing these guys as of yet lol. great and beautiful shot of this little protective speedy guy :)

  • David Friederich replied

I am sure this one had young near a pond I sometimes visit, because she/he came to me. I didn’t get the broken wing act, but I am sure she was trying to distract me away from the pond. Thank you, Kelly.

Fantastic capture David…instant fave! I’ve seen a few of these around here but they blend in with the scenery so well, I’ve never been able to get a decent clear shot!!! (Mind you, you’ve definitely got the “big guns” for getting such a fabulous closeup of this beauty!!!!!) Great job!

  • David Friederich replied

I do have a big gun for this shot. Earlier, I had used a smaller lens (400 mm) with this bird, but the shot didn’t fill the frame as this one did. I could not get the shots I do without my longest lens. Thank you Karen for a great comment and fave.

I’m sure she did have young if she came to you! No broken wing act? I guess she wasn’t to desperate to get you away then. the nest must have been a little ways off then. These guys always make me smile :)
