I captured this image of a male great blue heron on the shores of Vancouver Island near Campbell River in Canada. I thought the bird showed his beauty and pride in the photo.

Wikipedia says, “The largest North American heron, with a head-to-tail length of 91–140 cm (36-55 in), a wingspan of 167-201 cm (66-79 in), and a weight of 2–3.6 kg (4.4-8 lbs), it is blue-gray overall, with black flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season. Immature birds are duller in color, with a dull blackish-gray crown, and the flank pattern only weakly defined; they have no plumes, and the bill is dull gray-yellow.”

Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens with 1.4 teleconverter, ISO 400, f11, 1/800s.

superb david. i try to picture the heron, but have got nothing like this. they are easily spooked, and rarely found. in places they can be found, the distances are forbidding. i use a sigma 150×500 f4, but can’t get anything like this!

  • David Friederich replied

They must be really spooked then, Dougie, because I have tons of GBH photos from a variety of places, on salt water as this one is, and fresh water. I am usually able to get close enough for a shot. This bird was about 30 metres away. With the teleconverter, the equivalent focal length was 850 mm. Thanks for the comment, and good luck with your own gbh photo challenges.

I missed this while I was away, but now I’ve found it! I agree with Dougie, the blasted things like to be just a touch further away than the camera can easily manage, but I’ve seen them recently at the University.
I don’t get quality images like this though (pout! LOL). Lovely work as always, David.
    j

  • David Friederich replied

Without a long lens, it would be difficult to capture good images of great blue herons. While I am able to get good shots fairly frequently, I am hugely challenged to capture good images of butterflies. Thank you, Jesika.

  • Tallow

    Tallow

amaznig photo and amazing detail. How far away were you?

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you Tallow. I estimate that I was about 30 metres away from the bird when I shot this. He was standing on a rock about 10 metres off shore. I was on a ridge above the beach, probably 2-3 metres higher than the bird.
