Bald Eagle: Mature Adult on the Beach
This image was captured on the beach of the east coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, very close to my home. Bald eagles are thriving here. Frequently on my way to work I can count 10 to 15 birds. This one posed very nicely for me.
Captured with a Nikon D300, Nikkor 600 mm f4 lens with 1:4 teleconverter (840 mm), ISO 400, f6.3, 1/640s. Cropped, color corrected, and sharpened in PS CS4.

Oh this is awesome…looks like he is just posing there for you David…this is so close that you feel that he is a good friend of yours :) Another beauty.
David Friederich replied
He certainly was cooperative, Anthea. The close up brings a kind of intimacy that is not usual in my images of eagles. Thank you, Anthea.
linifer
Great shot! Must be fantastic to see them so regularly :))
David Friederich replied
It is fantastic, linifer. I feel very fortunate to have them so close and so plentiful. Just a couple of hundred metres from my place is a eagle nest. A chick hatched just days ago. I hear his loud call when I go outside, as he demands to be fed. Thank you for this comment, Linifer.
jesika
David, you have spoiled my morning. You see 10 to 15 Bald Eagles on your way to work!!! I’ve never seen a single one. Just NOT FAIR. Sulks in silence…LOL
Seriously, this is a superb shot, just what I would expect from you, there is so much detail and clarity.
jx
David Friederich replied
I just re-read my narrative, Jesika….A little hyperbole in my enthusiasm. I will change the text. More accurately it should read, “I can see as many as 10-15 eagles on my way to work. Invariably I see 3 or 4.” I hope that helps to reduce your sulks :)))). Thank you for commenting. I do feel very blessed to see and to hear these remarkable creatures. Their piercing cry touches one’s soul, and is iconic here on Canada’s west coast.

Wow!! He is majestic, I am envious, great shot David!!
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Marvin….:))) I am envious of the many great opportunities you get with hawks and night herons. If I see a hawk, which is not often, I have a terrible time getting close enough for a good shot.

this is another of your beautiful shots, d! since i, too, suffer from eagle deprivation, i’ve started to keep chris ewing’s tip, an eagle cam from BC, on my task bar. it’s @ the hancock wildlife channel web site. pretty darned amazing. the view, nornby island 2, is so close you can clearly see two eggs when she gets up to fluff her pillows. the cams also have audio.
David Friederich replied
Thank you very much Victoria. A year ago I met David Hancock at a bald eagle symposium here in Campbell River. I bought one of his books. You just reminded me to check his webcam on Hornby Island. Wow, I can’t wait to look. Thanks again.
