Wow what an amazing capture…I love how his wings are spread and his claws are open…like his about to swoop on his prey…this is a powerful photo David.

  • David Friederich replied

When eagles take off, Anthea, they jump and begin moving their wings all in one motion. His legs are outstretched from the kick, revealing those deadly talons with which eagles kill their prey. Thank you for another lovely comment, Anthea.

I set out yesterday looking for eagles, Marvin. I came across this guy standing on a rock on the beach just minutes from my house. I had the shot I was looking for in less than a half hour. I knew I could not do better, and sure enough I didn’t even though I was out for hours. Thank for the comment and fave.

  • AmyRalston

David, WOW!!! How awesome to see an eagle, but more to capture this! I’m sure the speed of your D300 came in handy. A favorite.

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you, Amy. I never tire of watching bald eagles. I captured many pictures of this one while he moved about this little island of kelp in a shallow bay, but I was waiting for that moment when he lifted off. I was happy to capture the event. The D300 is very good at these kind of photos. Thanks again, Amy.

  • Janet Fikar

    Janet Fikar

Simply spectacular! I can’t believe you hand held that monster lens and got such a super shot even if using a log for stabilization. Fantastic!

  • David Friederich replied

Actually balance on the log, the lens and camera was not much different than on the tripod, except that I did not have as much mobility as would have on the tripod. So it worked out well. While this is the best shot, I did get some other good ones too. Thank you for your comment, Janet…they are always much appreciated.
