Featured in 100% and in All Animals Great and Small, RB Homepage Oct. 24, 2009).

This is a rare bird, a beautiful bird. I am almost in tears as I write this. She is alone, a long distance from others of her kind. She is the first recorded visitor of her kind to Vancouver Island, and I had the good fortune to see her and to capture this image.

Nikon D300, Nikkor f4 600 mm lens, f10, 1/400s.

Awe,....what a lovely capture of our dear little visitor on her favorite branch! Lovely warm lighting on here and she is looking right at you! I am so happy to see that you were blessed with getting to see her in real life and capture some lovely shots to remember her by! I was quite concerned this past Thurs when I saw her being attacked by a flock of Crows. I thought they may end up either harming her and or driving her off from the territory she has claimed since landing here on the island. She isn’t the first Northern Hawk Owl to be sighted on Vancouver Island, but apparently the first in over 40 years, so says an avid long time birder! :)

  • David Friederich replied

Sandy, I had so much fun. I loved the connections I made with other photographers and birders. I am learning about this bird, with your comments and with other info. Shortly after I arrived on the scene, crows chased her, but she seemed to know that the humans lining the road would protect her. The crows disappeared.

Good gracious!!! David, you’ve outdone yourself with this one! This one really looks ready for printing and framing. The lovely line of the branch and of course the stunning focus on this beautiful bird as she stares back at us. David this one is almost surreal. What a wonderful shot. I sure hope it finds a mate somewhere. Aren’t they one of the birds that pair for life or whatever? A beautiful bird.

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you, Lizzy. I hope so too, but she is very far away from her normal range, the great boreal forest. It is a mystery how she came to Vancouver Island. I don’t know if the mate for life. I tried to find out, before I replied, but found no information about that.

  • Steve Buffington

    Steve Buffington

Great capture. The branch flowing through the shot adds a great deal while being subtle. Is she rare in the fact that she is an owl on the island or that she is a certain kind of owl?—steve

  • David Friederich replied

There are several species of owls on the Island, Steve. This owl is common in the great boreal forest that covers a huge amount of the northern part of the northern hemisphere, both here and in Europe and Russia. This bird somehow got off course, and somehow ended up in temperate rain forest of Vancouver Island. According to birders, it is the first recorded sighting of one here. Thank you for this great feedback, Steve. I am truly appreciative.
