Wetlands

My latest photographic project has been to capture in photographs the essence of the wetland areas I visit. This image was captured in the Fraser River estuary of south west Canada. The image reveals a male mallard duck flying through the vegetation of the marsh at considerable speed, travelling from one pond to another in late afternoon light.

Nikon D300, Nikkor f4 600 mm lens, ISO 400, f4, 1/800s.

The low late afternoon light is very effective in adding a lovely warm hue to the marsh environment. The Mallard is so nicely framed in flight and it completes this lovely wetland capture perfectly! :)

  • David Friederich replied

The light was awesome, Sandy. I had so much difficulty making this picture. There were lots of opportunities, but the ducks fly so fast. I either couldn’t track them fast enough, or when I did my autofocus was too slow. This one is my favourite of several successful images. Thank you very much for such detailed feedback, Sandy.

The lighting is superb, and the tree branches make me think of a delicate lace curtain to which beyond we spy a magical natural world!

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you so much, Holly. This one hasn’t been as popular as I expected it to be. I personally really like it because it captures the essence of this marsh for me.
