Floathome Community at Canoe Pass
Several floathome communities exist on the Fraser River on the West Coast of Canada. This one is at Canoe Pass on the delta of this huge river just a short distance from where the river flows into Georgia Strait and the Pacific Ocean. I captured this image of an alternative life style upscale community at dawn in the low light of late autumn. The river is calm; the air is misty.
Nikon D2Xs, 12-24 mm lens, on a Gitzo tripod, F22, ISO 200, 30 seconds in the low light.

Floathome Community at Canoe Pass belongs to the following groups:

Love this….the feel, the reflections, the fog…AWESOME David :)
David Friederich replied
Oh I am glad you do. I am glad I was up early this morning to capture this image before sunrise. Thank you, Orphie.
Vickie Emms
this is beautiful David, what a mood it creates. I would love the sound of the slap of water on the house (I think)
David Friederich replied
These are beautiful homes, Vickie, but a very different way of enjoying nature from what I expect you are used to.
Marvin Collins
Well it sure paid off, getting up early. Beautiful image, love the reflections, colors and excellent composition!!
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Marvin. I think this is probably a very different early morning experience than you would have.

David this is Awesome …bring back so many memories ..curious was this taken in Ladner?..I Lived in Vancouver for 21 yrs and honest this is the coolest photo of house boats i ever saw…WOW,,,,,steve
David Friederich replied
Hi Steve,
Yes, this was shot this morning in Ladner. I couldn’t sleep, so was out early with the camera on my tripod. The fog and the lack of wind made for a great photo. Thank you for your comment, Steve.

Beautiful dreamy capture,it would be lovely to have a lifestyle centered around this
David Friederich replied
I think people here have a wonderful “water lifesyle” similar to other places such as on the Rhine in the Netherlands.
Gary Lengyel
Nice ‘mood’ shot -well done.
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Gary.
David Iori
Lovely capture DAvid
David Friederich replied
Thank you, David.
DIANEPEAREN
THIS IS AWESOME…..WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO LIVE….ROCKED TO SLEEP EVERY NIGHT…OR MAYBE NOT.THINKING BACK ON THE STORMS OF WINTER 2006….I WONDER IF THEY LOST ANY OF THEIR BEAUTIFUL HOMES.I HOPE NOT!
David Friederich replied
It is awesome, Diane. No huge storm watches since I have experienced this place.
Fremme
awesome shot, love the mood of this image, well captured and great compositoin, love missing that early morning fog, again well done
David Friederich replied
So appreciative of your comment, Fremme. Thank you.
blondiegirl
Oh! what a wonderful idea! i spent some time living on a houseboat and loved it. I imagine this would be a little different but along the same lines. it looks marvelous and I love the way you have captured this!! Well Done!
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Selina. These are different from houseboats. They are houses built on a float, like a barge, and anchored. Each house “owns” a water lot. They are part of a strata organization. Most of the homes are architecturally designed, and some are quite upscale.
Jason Vickers
What a great image, can say i have never seen anything like this myself.
David Friederich replied
There are several float home communities on the Fraser River, and they are even more common in the Netherlands. Thank you for your comment, Jason.
Marcia Luly
beautiful photo…fascinating concept!
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Lulybelle. The concept really suits people who are into boating in a big way. You’ll notice boats tied up with many of the homes.
jesika
Very different from the basic house boats on the Ouse at York! It looks beautiful and you have captured it so well.
j
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Jesika. Here is the same view captured during the summer:
David Friederich replied
Whoops, I’ll try that again:
Richard Allen
A really beautiful image and so full of mood.
The water was so still to show up like that with a 30 second exposure.
I’d always wondered about living like this, no risk of floods. :)
Anthea Slade
Wow what a stunning photo. I love the blue tones and the tranquil feel of this beautiful capture. So very well done. Love the atmosphere and the exquisite peace in this work.
David Friederich replied
Life can be very peaceful here, as it was on this day. Other times, say during winter storms, it is not quite so tranquil. Fog always comes, it seems, with a level of silence that seems to be evoked in this visual image. Thank you, Anthea.
Janet Fikar
Wow – the fog and calmness gives it an eerie feel – good shot
David Friederich replied
There was a somewhat eerie feel. It was very quiet, and most people had not arisen yet, except those in the center home. Check out the same scene in summer:
mmills3080

SandraRos
Woooow what a beautiful scene, your photographs is awesome
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Sandra. I hope life is returning to normal for you.
John Hooton
Great composition and thoughtful technique to get this excellent quality image.
David Friederich replied
Thanks John. I was trying to get a late Fall comparison to the same scene I had captured during the summer:
Von McKnelly
Love the original David but this takes the cake….warm and cold feeling combined together…bravo!!
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Von. Yes, I really like the warmth of the lights in the cold blue mist and water. You articulated my response perfectly. Until I read your words, I couldn’t say what I liked about this one. Much appreciated, Von. Sorry I haven’t commented a lot on your work lately. For what ever reason, I was sent to the clothing page from many links. I don’t know why.
Sandy Stewart
Nicely composed moody scene! A lovely scene, depicting cool weather outside and inviting warmth inside! :)
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Sandy. I love your comment about cool and warmth.
Joanne Bradley
Both shots are just stunning! I just never visualize something like this in Canada! Wow! It must be such an experience to live there!
David Friederich replied
A common image of Canada is the frozen north, but Canada is huge, and very diverse. Glad you like both of these images, Joanne, and thank you so much for your comment.
David George
Very nicely shot David, the art of photography is knowing how things are and you showed that with both shots. I will be so glad when class is over next week. Been behind ever since the funeral for Brian. Glad to see are still shooting in the cold.
David Friederich replied
I like your description of the art of photography. I will remember this. I will be off in two weeks for a two week Christmas break. Like you, I am looking forward to some “free time”. I am really enjoying shooting in the cold and the interesting light it provides. Thank you, David.
amarica
Congratulations on being featured in the Nikon DSLR Users group!!!

We used to have less-fortunate families living on “houseboats” on the lower Columbia R. tributaries when I was in school. Some of the kids were in school with me. They were not upscale in our area! Coming back 35 years later, I don’t think they allow them anymore. Or they tax the life out of them, or something. I’ve looked in the corners and eddies heck, maybe it was Mt. St. Helens exploding or something. I haven’t found any, anyway.
David Friederich replied
Thank you for the historical perspective on the “houseboats” on the Columbia River. These homes are very different. There are many government regulations about the homes. Water lots are expensive, and there are many restrictions and criteria for how the homes can be built. This is an upscale community, and a beautifully connected community to the natural environment.
Wendi Donaldson
This is such a beautiful shot….it has such a lovely almost mystical feel about it, with the tones and the mist.
David Friederich replied
I love your comment, Wendi. Thank you.
Elle Advincula
Beautiful capture, I have to say those houses are expensive, but i guess you’re paying for the view and all the lobsters underneath=)
David Friederich replied
Thank you. I don’t know that they are any more expensive than any other waterfront homes, and I bet the owners would like to have east coast salt water lobsters living in the fresh water river.
Elle Advincula
Lol, yes of course no lobster in the river.
David Friederich replied
LOL
Gavin J Hawley
Beautiful shot.
David Friederich replied
Thank you, Gavin.
