The Journey

David Friederich

The Journey

Millions of birds in the world embark on huge migrations twice each year. Sandhill cranes are large birds that also take part in the archetypal journey. This image is a composite, built on an actual capture of six birds one afternoon on the Fraser River estuary of south west British Columbia, and an image captured earlier of the full moon. I created this work based on personal sitings of migratory birds flying through moonlight. I titled my work, The Journey, because there is so much symbolism for all of us in the concept of a journey, or a quest. This journey is a quest for life.

David! This is fantastic!! They almost look like prehistoric birds! Great work!

  • David Friederich replied

They always remind me of Jurassic creatures. Even their screechy cry is primitive. Thank you, Ozlem.

Breathtaking, atmospheric and truly beautiful David. This tells a story in a photograph. You are a gifted photographer. Well done.

  • David Friederich replied

Well, I might frame this comment, Anthea, and use it to brag to my friends, LOL. I admire the composite work of others, and decided to try it. The picture of the cranes was a nice piece for my collection, but not very artistic. I wanted to tell a story, and it seems I did. As always, I very much value the feedback you give me, Anthea.

Wonderful, wonderful awesome capture ! ! You really got a trophy shot here.

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you, Sandra, but I don’t want you to think this picture was one photograph. This is a composite. I put the picture of the cranes, a pretty ordinary image, on top of an image of the full moon.

Great work David. I love to hear the geese as they travel at night on their journeys north or south in spring and autumn

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you, Jacqi. I love the sound of the geese too. Last night, in the wee small hours, I heard a flock go over. It warmed my heart.

Excellent caputre with those cranes in the dark sky and against that moon! Wow!

  • David Friederich replied

Thank you, Joanne, but this image is a composite, a union of an image of the moon which is the background. I put the crane image over top, and with few other manipulations, voila!

Love this David. I didn’t know they flew at night. The sandhill cranes are so graceful in flight. Excellent image! Love the silhouettes against the moon.

  • David Friederich replied

Carol, I think they do fly at night, although I am not certain of that. This image is a composite, as I describe in the accompanying text. I had a picture of the moon, which I combined with the crane image. I shot the cranes one afternoon in summer. Thank you for commenting.
