A Stray Dog

A Stray DogJeremy was sitting atop a picnic table at a park near his high school. He was supposed to be in class, but he was more of an outsider and didn’t have any real close friends. He had never played hooky before, but a group of boys had given him a hard time during the changing of the classes and to avoid telling anyone he made the mistake of taking off. He knew it was wrong, his mother was home and he didn’t want to cause any more trouble with his entangled parents. Besides, his idea was to take an hour off and return to school even if he missed a class. Detention center was a quiet place to be at and he wouldn’t have to listen to his mother and father arguing all the time.Behind the 16 year teenager was a little pond with fish and ducks swimming by and he looked into his lunch bag to find his sandwich to feed them. He stood on the table and pulled out his food and tore some pieces to throw into the water. From out of nowhere came a stray dog and jumped in and gobbled all of the pieces he had thrown in for the fish and ducks. Jeremy was furious and took some small rocks nearby and threw them towards the stray dog in the water. One or two rocks hit the large brown short hair dog, but not until he ate all of food did he splash out and run for cover.Meanwhile behind him was a gang of boys in a car driving by that spotted him and stopped. They surrounded him while he had his back towards them and when they called him names he took noticed. They wanted his money, but being of modest means he barely had a dollars worth of change. They kicked him and punched him until they lifted him and threw him into the pond. They laughed and insulted him as they walked away not realizing that the pond was deep and that Jeremy was semi-conscious and didn’t know how to swim. They quickly got in the car and drove away with his day’s soda money. The teenager started swallowing the pond water and coughing while trying to get out of the predicament he was in. His panic mode made it hard for him to gain any leverage and his weakness from the beating was draining him of any energy. He was about to drown when he heard and felt the splash coming from the edge of the pond. It was the stray dog that dived in and swam towards the confused young teen. He allowed Jeremy to regain his balance as he stayed with him until he placed his arms around his neck. The neglected dog was strong from living a rough life and had become a powerful animal within his own right. It was not easy to swim with Jeremy on his back, but with a powerful dog peddle and the young boy allowing his body to float, it became conceivable that there was a chance to reach the side of the pond. By then a policeman had driven by and seen the tragedy that was evolving and had quickly gone to his rescue. With the help of both of them Jeremy was saved and driven home later when it was assumed that he was okay.Jeremy’s parents were not happy about what he had done about missing school, but were relieved that he was okay. When they questioned his story, they found it hard to believe of how it had all taken place. He made them take him to the park to see the dog for themselves. At first it was hard to find him because a dog catcher was trying to trap him and place him in his pick-up. They saw what was happening and quickly drove over to where he was.The stray dog was still shivering and his fur was soaking wet. “Sir, that is my son’s dog and I will pay whatever fines I need to get him back home,” loudly and bravely spoke Jeremy’s father.Jeremy and Life Savior, as they named the dog right there on spot loaded up on the back of the families old pick-up and drove home where they bathe him, dried him, and fed him a good meal. The money spent on the fees for the dog left a big void on their budget, but it was more than worth it. Somehow the family became closer with Life Savior, and the arguing eased even if they had less money to work with. The young teenager donated his soda money, and that was that.
