Another excellent shot Colin. I bet you know why 29 Sqdn has 3 "X"s as it’s sqdn number !!
    Cheers Neil.

  • 29 Sqn has 29 as its Sqn No Neil! I was told that the three Xs were chosen for the Sqn indentity marking because it was the code stamped on a barrel of best bitter! Another story has it that the original painters and dopers couldn’t spell 29 in Roman numerals and left the “I” out of XXIX. Cheers!

The story I read was when it was explained how to write 29 in Roman the “painter” was told, “X” “X” and “1” “X”, so he did that, “X” “X” and “one X”. They should of written it down !!LOL – Cheers.

  • I heard that too – makes a good yarn though!

Disgusting this image of such a fine aircraft has only four comments. I loved seeing this aircraft while I was in the US Navy and think – next to the Tomcat – that this aircraft was the sleekest and bestest of all! Thanks for the grand memories!

  • Thanks so much for your comments, (Tony?). I guess familiarity breeds contempt but also perhaps admiration. After such a long relationship I probably got to love the Toom! The US Navy seldom performed at Bitish airshows and I only saw the F-14 demonstrated 3 or 4 times – I thought it was superb – I always watched with my jaw sagging open!
