Phantom FGR.2 XV429/K with RAT deployed by

Phantom FGR.2 XV429/K of 29 Squadron pictured on final approach to RAF Coningsby in 1982. The aircraft appears to have some kind of systems failure as the RAT (ram air turbine) is deployed. This turbine is slipstream driven and provides emergency electrical and hydraulic power.

Great shot Colin. The RAT is more efficient if the nosewheel opens backwards – has been known to not fully deploy the nosewheel on some aeroplanes. – Ted
