Pictured getting its gear up after taking off at Flying Legends 2008 is Christophe Jacquard’s Spitfire PR.XIX PS890/F-AZJS. The aircraft was fitted with an ex-Shackleton 2,450 hp Griffon 57A and contra props by previous owner, reknowned American aviator Steve Hinton, for climb record attempts. The elongated Shackleton spinner added over a foot to the Spitfire’s length making it look very sleek and the extra power gave it the performance of a scalded cat, pushing the top speed to nearly 500mph. Over the winter of 2008/9 PS890 was refitted with its original 2.050 hp Rolls-Royce Griffon 66 and five-blade prop.
