Words by The Doc - Part 5

I really wrote this in 1972. It was to my high school sweetheart. I took a leave of absence from her to ‘Quote’ find myself, ‘Unquote’ and finally ran her down 3 years later, with 1 year of that spent with me searching for her in my spare time. The day I located her in Memphis, I just thought she would come running to my arms. OOPS! It didn’t work that way. A friend of mine and I drove up in front of her apartment and knocked on her door. Her roommate answered the door. I said, “Is she here?” and her roommate replied you just missed her, she’s on her way to pick up her wedding dress. Enjoy this blues song as much as I was hurt when I wrote it, and it will have served it’s purpose…Blues are real not fantasies…

Ending Blues

Will you be smiling when you say goodbye,
Will you have a hurt look and start to cry?
We made a lot of promises we wouldn’t break,
But it looks like your heart is one I can’t take.

Since I can’t stay around I’ll skip this crying scene,
I’ll never forget you or those eyes so green.
(may cut this verse)
If you ever think of me just look down the dusty road,
Cause without you in due time the bottle will be my code.

As my broken heart will walk that road like it is dead,
And my no ring hand will hold my weary head.
And without you only our memories to save,
From when I was with you till the lovers grave.

But always remember our laughter and you know what,
We swore no one could replace this or even get us hot.
When I told you how beautiful you were then kid,
I always meant it a lot more than my words said I did.

So as I end this song or tune from my deepest me,
I can say I will always love you and hope to see,
That you still love me somewhere inside you,
So I never have to feel this never ending blues.

I was in a 10 cent Motel in Tupelo, MS (and no not looking for Elvis because he was still performing) and on January 1, 1971 I was down and out. Hidden from all who loved me but hanging out with the one who hated me and invented the lie (must I identify this He anymore?) Strung out, hung out, done out, and fixing to be run out when lying on this roach bed I wrote this poem. I believe The Old Man never gave up on me and has a purpose for me. If anyone out there is seeing those smoke rings, believe me they are real and from the Highest Authority. If you are getting this second chance don’t pass it up. Like the poem says the smoke rings fade away…GRW

Collection One

The old man with a beard and pipe that was never lit
I’ve never seen him say a word
or even nod his head.
But still, I just sit and stare
and easily read his eyes.
He’s always got his paper and pen
to write his beautiful words.
He motioned for me to come near
and as a servant so I did.
He, with stern eyes, looked me over,
my long hair and patched up clothing
did not amaze him.
He then just wrote down some words
and closed his eyes.
The old man with a beard and pipe that was never lit.
He then just handed me the paper
with hands showing time,
and slowly limped away.
It said,
You watch what grows
and forget what dies.
You seem to want to be someone,
maybe you will.
But watch what grows and forget what dies.
Signed the old man with a beard
and pipe that never was lit.
And as I was watching him go over the hill
I was shocked as I saw smoke rings
spelling ‘peace go with you’ top over
the hill so perfect they looked like
just my imagination,
watching the words grow
and float away.

To all of those who dream and don’t have to walk that extra mile. Dr. G

This is a true story in a way. What I mean is I was talking to a friend and I got the idea from our phone call in which I almost fell a sleep and said to Nick, “Wake me up at the end of this phone call” and he said “Gary, we can write a song about this”. Or either I said that. We never could remember and just wrote this song for all you country folks. We hope you like it and we get someone to perform it…

One More for the Road

I remember the night you called me,
and told me that our love was done.
Since then I’ve been picking up pieces,
but all of the good ones are gone.

Now I know that I haven’t been faithful,
and sometimes been down right unkind,
but if you leave me now darling,
I will go right out of my mind.

So wake me up at the end of this phone call.
I must be having a dream,
You tell me that you are leaving for another,
seems more like a nightmare to me.
(That is the chorus with a guitar riff)

Now I’m out here at the bar room
living on whiskey, bourbon, and gin,
but it don’t matter how much I drink
it won’t bring you back again.

My only wish is that I could live it over
and change the bad thinga I have done,
but I could tell by your voice when you called me,
that all my of my chances are gone.
(Chorus twice, second one fading out)

Nick your good…Stay that way….GRW

Update: Low and behold I received a call that didn’t put me to sleep. Got a call from Nick and he and his pretty other half and their darling daughter are doing great in their part of this world..Well Nick, maybe someday we can get together and conjure up another song..I will add on “Wine and Women” soon as I dig that one up..I can’t remember all the new words we added to my ’74 version..Though it did change it to the better..Was just country in ’74 and when we finished in ’89, it was a great country blues lick..Thanks to your new ideas..Will stay in touch, Dude…..GRW

Artist's Description

The following written works were written by my brother, Dr. G (no, he’s not a real doctor!!). I just want to share them with you and hope that you enjoy them as much as I do. Some are written as lyrics, some will make you laugh, some will make you cry and then some will make you go “what the…..” !!! I posted one a while back, Song of the Mustard Seed, which is one of my favorites.

Many of these were written many years ago and some within the past few years. These are copied in their entirety as sent to me through e-mail and include introductions and just some of his personal thoughts, experiences and wisdom. Well, OK, I didn’t include the whole e-mail, just the relevant parts!! They were once posted on a web site that I built for him, that is where some of the intro things he says refer to!! There are many, so I will add a few to each entry so not to take up too much of your time.

If you missed the first posting and want to read more writings from the Doc Click here. The Doc is now on the bubble!!
