Great Plains Building

The Great Plains Building, now known as NTS. On May 11, 1970, the Lubbock (Texas) Tornado struck the city. Twenty-six people died, and damage was estimated at $125 million. The downtown NTS Tower, then known as the Great Plains Life Building, at 271 feet (83 m) in height, is believed to have been the tallest building ever to survive a direct hit from an F5 tornado. This building was actually twisted by the tornado and was damaged so badly that many thought it would collapse: on the roof of the building several radio towers were twisted or broken off. Much of the plaster in the stairwell walls between the 4th and 16th floors had cracked and 60% of the building’s windows were shattered. A foot of permanent deformation damage occurred at the steel frame on the south side, and three of the building’s four elevators were damaged with the support rails bent.

Then Mayor Jim Granberry and the Lubbock City Council, which included Granberry’s successor as mayor, Morris W. Turner, were charged with directing the task of rebuilding the downtown in the aftermath of the storm.

Can you image replacing the more than 50 windows?!!

My brother was in that tornado and the hotel he was staying in was destroyed. His room and the one next to his were the only 2 left. A friend of his pulled him (he’s a paraplegic) off the bed and covered them with the mattress and saved their lives. Thanks so much my friend :)
