Indian Mound
Spruce Bluff Pioneer Trail, Port Saint Lucie, FL – Located in the middle of a very populated residential area!!
This is part of a 100 acre pioneer settlement that was first settled 1891. The Indian Mound is said to be prehistoric and there was no other information available for it. There are 2 self-guided interpretive trails (I found one cut short by a street and fence, it was suppose to continue on the other side, but I could not find the trail) of about a 1/2 mile loop.
There is no one around to greet you, just a message board with the brochure and map. I was the only one there walking the trail. The brochure said the best time to see the wildlife is early morning or late evening, but there was still a bit around while I was there. There are suppose to be rattlesnakes, wild boar and many species of birds. I heard a lot of things in the scrub areas, but only saw a few birds, a tortoise and something with a long tail!! Only caught a glimpse of it!
With this being in the middle of “town”, so to speak, the peace and serenity was almost deafening! This and some of the other preserves I hope to be showing soon, is the REAL Florida. It’s not all about the beaches and Disney World. There is so much more to see and do. Stop and enjoy nature, before it’s gone.
This nest was in a tree that was at one time growing (now it’s dead) on top of the mound. There are signs of a fire at one time. You can see the blackened trees. Trees were down everywhere, but I think some of that was from the hurricanes.

Most of Florida isn’t really thickly wooded, but full of pines, scrub and Saw Palmettos and the swampy areas! Thanks John….glad you like them! :)
