Well when I was a kid growing up in WA I called them ‘Donkey Orchids’ they are beautiful- a great shot well done :)

Hi Jules. Thanks for the comment. Pansy Orchid, as I understand it is a common name given to the larger, more purple coloured varieties. But, common names change from year to year, so to me the entire Diuris group are still donkey orchids.

Well my mother & grandmother (and great grandmother for that matter lol) are from SW WA and they have always referred to them as Donkey Orchids so I think that ones there to stay- and a good name for kids as it sounds interesting and makes them use their imaginations. :)

A beautiful shot. Another fav.
I grew up on a farm in the Grampians, near Hall’s Gap, Vic. where I would go search and discover each year in spring time, the natural abundance and wonderful varieties of wildflowers and ground orchids. Donkeys were amongst them.

Thank you. If you live near bushland, take an hour or so to check it out late August, Early September. You may be surprised by what has survived in suburbia.

Oh I live in the tropics now – married a FNQ’er. It is a totally different landscape here, commonly referred to as rainforest. Wet, green & warm and where most orchids grow, up off the ground, from barks on tree branches etc. and are much bigger than these delicate single stemmed ground orchids.

Thats true. Still there are a few interesting ones up there.

This is a wonderful shot of the Donkey Orchids or Pansy Orchids. Just to throw my two cents into the name thang, here in SA, they’re also known as Bulldogs… hee hee!!! They keep changing the name of orchids, so I won’t be surprised if they gain yet another name soon lol!
Again, a wonderful shot! claps
