Artist's Description

I call this type of senamy…‘scribble’ as it is made up of wonderful multi-coloured straws in a scribble formation. I use this and many other types of senamy to make millinery pieces. My hats are mostly custom-made and I’ve done commissions for commercial sponsorship, for weddings, for television drama and for many race-goers. It is such wonderful material to work with. It comes in rolls of many different colours as well as lurex threaded, waffle weave and this multi-coloured textured variety. Senamy is a woven material made from the grasses at the base of the banana tree and has become one of the most popular materials in millinery (hat-making) in recent years as it is a natural fibre, dyes really well and is very workable.

This image shows a roll of scribble senamy with a roll of bright turquoise senamy in the background. I think it makes a very interesting abstract.
