Quaint Old Cottage
Artwork from Ireland. I came across this little old cottage in The Aran Islands off the coast of County Clare/ County Galway on the west coast of Ireland. I’m sure there was a pot of tea brewing on the stove there many many years ago. These tiny fields are dating from The Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s Ireland. That’s the sea in the background.

wow what an amazing little cottage! fantastic find:)
Irene Burdell
A lovely shot and great little cottage .
George Link
This is one FINE capture! Beautiful..makes me wonder>>>>
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you George. I must go back to try and find this cottage again when I buy myself my NIKON D90 camera. This image was take with a very old digital camera that I borrowed a few years ago….it may have been only a 3 mega-pixel camera I think. I would love to take it again with the 12.3MP camera.
John Quinn
Beautiful shot Orla
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you John. :)
tom burke
beautiful colors, what time of year was it taken, well done
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Tom. It was taken in 2006 and I think it would have been about May and it was taken with a very old digital camera that I borrowed. I think it must have been a 3MP camera. :)
Michelle MP33
Superb shot. Lovely colors.
99gnome
Beautiful shot you took there :) Could you possibly turn it, so the horizon is even? I think it would boost the first impression even further ;o)
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Joe. Actually I did try that initially….straightening the horizon line but I didn’t like the wall in the foreground being straight. I thought the diagonal foreground stone wall looked more interesting. :)
Teresa Zieba
Beautiful and thanks for the info.
Orla Cahill replied
You’re welcome Teresa. Thanks for visiting. :)
Sally Omar
Beautiful!!!!!!!! xoxooxoxxoox
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Sally. :)
Carol Berliner
wow amaaaaazing work! instant fav!
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Carol. And thanks for the fav. :)
NatureGreeting...
WOW A stunning old cottage, I could live here! Love that sod roof, and the stone fences! Such a beautiful landscape! Its perfect, other than the horizon being a bit off. A favorite! Thanks, Carolyn.
Orla Cahill replied
Hi Caroline, Thanks for visiting. About the Horizon, I wish I could straighten the horizon but it’s impossible without ruining the angle of the stone wall to the front of the image so I decided it looked better this way. Well the real reason I took this image is for the purpose of painting the scene. At least in painting it I will be able to have a horizontal horizon and nicely angled wall. :)
NatureGreeting...
I thought about the wall after commenting, and saw it would not look so well. Hope to see your painting soon * Still a *GORGEOUS SHOT!!
Orla Cahill replied
It’ll probably take a while before I get around to that one. But I will certainly put it up here when I do get it done. :)
Tom Gomez
Excellent composition …
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Tom and thanks for the visit. :)
Pat Yager
I’m so glad you discovered this picturesque cottage, Orla! It has so much character – a lovely capture! – Pat
Orla Cahill replied
Hi Pat, Thank you. It certainly has lots of character…one of the many photos of mine waiting to be painted. Glad I captured it when I did, despite it being taken with a very old digital camera of very low pixel count. It will be a great reference. :)
ragman
I live in one just like this presently, have done for the last nine years, but the cottage actually dates back over the last five centuries
ragman
we still the same dry stone walls around the cottage just like that too, ..... but ours wasn’t ever thatched strangely, as it was called the slate house, and as a fishing village, the fish were dried on the roof
Orla Cahill replied
Wow! You live in a cottage like this. It must be full of character. Well thatched roofs are indeed so beautiful but I’m sure they must be so costly to maintain. You are lucky to have such magnificent stone walls around you too. I’m afraid I have to put up with boring concrete :( . I see you are from Kearney…It must be full of wonderful inspiration with lovely fishing boats, & the wonderful sea in view every day. :)
Agnes McGuinness
Beautiful capture, Orla. Gorgeous scenery. Congratulations on your top ten place. Agnes xx
Orla Cahill replied
Hi Agnes, thanks for that…but I’m not sure which group that’s (top 10) in?

Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Shannon & Stefan. Hopefully you will get a chance to visit Ireland sometime, but when you do, be sure to bring a ‘brolly’...an umbrella (in case you don’t understand that slang).. :)
RiSH :
This type of cottage comes in my dreams, I think I lived there in somewhere near. You exactly captured the feel.
Orla Cahill replied
Very nice that you dream of such a little old cottage. Maybe you lived there in a past life. Thanks for visiting .. :)
jchanders
Phantastic scene and shot! And so full of happy memories for me in connection with a visit to the main island in … 1967! A sure fave!
And many congrats!
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you for your compliments and the fav. I’m glad that it brings you happy memories of your time spent in Ireland. I’m sure if you came back to visit our land again you would find enormous changes since your time in 1967…some good ones and I’m sure some not so good. But on The Aran Islands off the west-coast of Ireland, where I found this little cottage, thankfully a lot of original unspoilt beauty still remains :)
LindaJBazor
Very beautiful shot and area. I suggest that you submit this to the Going Coastal group if you haven’t done so.

Orla Cahill replied
Well indeed you are correct. Thanks for letting me know. :)
ragman
Now how did I know that
Orla Cahill replied
Ah yes! I’ve spotted your wonderful chair photo with the amazing sun-ray light bursting through the window. Magnificent!...I was reading in your profile too that you have a Nikon D300…super camera…Mine is just a humble 6mp ‘point & shoot’ thing…Will be starting a full-time photography course in sept and will be buying myself a nice DSLR b4 then…I’m looking at the Nikon D90 (12.3mp)or the Canon 50D (15.1mp)...Hopefully I’ll have one of those b4 the end of the summer…. :)
ragman
Before you do, could I get you think about portability
a lot of images are taken on the go with my Lumix Leica LX3 it’s under £300
but the Nikon D80 or D90 are excellent choices; with a DSLR my philosophy is buy a lower priced body; but then spend the rest on one really good lens say a 24-120mm Nikkor
the quality is always needed in the lens, all the bodies are fine ~ does that make sense ~ the lenses are the eyes
Orla Cahill replied
Yes that does make a lot of sense.. Thanks David :)
Sharon Mau
It is wonderful! Congratulations on your feature. I love the stone walls.
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Sharon. I’m a big fan of lovely old stone walls too. They have such wonderful colour tones in them, fossils ans shape planes. :)
E.R. Bazor
Love it!
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you sooo much for the feature! This was never meant to be a ‘photography’ type of photo as I took it as reference for painting it but people seemed to like it so I put here on RB and it seems that the RB community seem to like it too. So I’m really pleased. Thanks again. :)

Orla Cahill replied

Ruth Vilmi
Orla, thank you so much for this photo. It’s too beautiful for words, and brings back memories of my trip to Ireland in 1953.
Orla Cahill replied
You are very welcome Ruth. :~) Trusting you had a good time while you were visiting Ireland then. I’m sure you wouldn’t know the place now…so many changes, some good, some not so good but this cottage is on one of the Aran Islands off the west-coast so is still relatively unspoilt. Not many changes there. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you. Hope life is good in Finland. :)

Gustav Nordlund
Grats on the homepage :) I visited those islands a long long time ago and I remember them stilla s an amazing place. Great shot of a this wonderful cottage. I looks like a place where time has stood still for a long time :)
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Gustav. Interesting to know that you were there. There are 3 Islands in the group of Aran Islands: Inis Mór (Big Island), Inis Meáin (Middle island) and Inis Oírr (East island)...I cannot actually remember whether this was on Inis Meáin or the smallest island Inis Oírr. You may remember that Inis Mór was more ‘touristy’ than the other two but they certainly are a lovely place to visit when it’s not raining. Definitely it looks like time has stood still for a long time on the 2 smaller islands which is great when one wants to get away from it all. Must try and get back there myself sometime this year. :)
E.R. Bazor

TREVOR IRWIN
This is so beautiful. In 2005 I was on Innismore Island. It is like stepping back 200 years. The film called The man of Aran” was so informative and these people really lived a hard life. The early settlers had to carry seaweed and lay it out on top of the stony ground and as it rotted it formed into soil that they grew food. This cottage is a rare example of times past. Again you have captured this so well. Thank you for sharing my beautiful Ireland with the world.
http://www.philadelphia33.org/
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Trevor. Hope it brings back some nice memories for you. I’m impressed at your knowledge of the way of life of the Aran islanders of years gone by. Peace be with you. :)
Marjorie Wallace
Oooh, congratulations on being featured on the front page today. I have loved this photo from the moment I saw it in cottage-style and have dreamed of traveling to Ireland to see this in person. madvlad
looks like a home that was left bhind in 1840,s when all the irish came west, one of my g.g.gran moms left then,so that maked me 1/32nd irish, not enough to brag about, not enough to make meruin me either ,haha,as we say erin go bra less haha, bad ,joke.
Orla Cahill replied
Yes I would say it probably is dated mid-1800’s…amazing that it is still standing. It looks like it has been abandoned for a long long time. Imagine the houses they throw up today still standing in 150 years time…I’d say most of them won’t be. So you’re 1/32nd Irish (that must have taken some working out)...well they say there are many more millions of Irish living abroad that are living in Ireland. ...You say Érin go bra… well at the moment it looks like ‘Érin go broke’...the state of the economy at the moment…
madvlad
oria don,t feel bad, we all are going broke except the people who caused the land slide, they are getting lots of run away money, i,m sorry for you, you are young and will have to pay the taxes and other ills of this whole mess , me? i came into the world poor – till hitler put us to work ,not roosvelt- shame to say it but true, but i had the best,so i,m out of here, soon, god bless you girl, yes there are more of your country men,s blood here in the u.s. then there, thank you for your notes nice of you-take care,
Debbie Roelle

This is amazing and Ireland is a place I have had a life time desire to travel to. Maybe one day I hope and your capture is just how i imagined the old places to be. Well done and I have been told that I would have ancestors from there.
Orla Cahill replied
Thank you Ann. Hope you get your chance to travel to Ireland sometime. These kind of houses are rare though. This one was on the Aran Islands off the West coast. It is still quite traditional there. :)
