Throw-up!

Artist's Description

The throw-up for the Kirkwall Ba game on New Year’s Day 2008. This is a close-up version of this photo: http://www.redbubble.com/people/orcadia/art/632...
I’m not sure which version I prefer – one gives more of a sense of movement and immediacy, the other shows more ‘scene setting’ with some of the street – and some people standing on a roof to watch!

The Ba is played every Christmas and New Year’s Day in Kirkwall, Orkney. It’s a kind of traditional game of mass football, played in the streets of the town between the Uppies and the Doonies. Throw-up is from the Merkat Cross in front of St Magnus Cathedral at 1pm, and the game often takes several hours to reach a conclusion. The Uppie goal is a wall and the Doonie goal is the harbour basin!
