Great exposure and fantastic image. My wife and I stayed in Inverness last Feb hoping to glimpse the northern lights but no luck. Perhaps not northern enough really. Plenty of snow though which was nice! I was wondering how often you see the aurora in Orkney.

This is really GREAT I do some night photography but I am along way from producing an image this grand.

To be honest although we see the merry dancers from Orkney relatively often from about October – March, it’s usually just a silver or greenish glow in the sky. I’ve seen the aurora ‘dancing’ a few times each winter, but only really spectacular coloured displays twice in 8 years living here. And the display where I took this photo really was a once in a lifetime experience. It went on for hours – and was all over the sky, not just to the north. Quite incredible, and an experience I will never forget.

Wonderful I loved the juxtaposition of natures soft light to the mans harsh light.

Unfortunately we do not get the Northern Lights this far south apart from once. Can’t remember the reason we were able to see it but it was predicted on the news and was a site to behold, although not as spectacular as you get it up there.
