The old brown case

The old brown case his grandfather used
All those years before
Sat wearily waiting for it’s next sojourn
Down beside the front door

Stuffed with socks, singlets and jocks
Shirts and jumpers and jeans
Bathroom items, a torch, a good book
All zipped up, but stretched at the seams

This case had travelled some miles, and more
In cars and trams and on trains
From town to town it had held it’s load
In taxi’s, on buses and planes

But its tired old handle was weathered and torn
Its stitching was starting to wear
An old leather belt held it together
And a sticker said ‘Handle with Care’

A traveller it was, and lands it had seen
But also through each generation
Grandfather to father, and now down to the son
Awaiting its final vacation

The old brown case
