The Shepherds View
Every year for over 100 years, Basque Sheep herders have grazed thier flocks in this drainage of the Boulder White Cloud Mountains in central Idaho. Each shepherd carves his name and the year in this aspen grove that overlooks the Sawtooth Valley. To this day they tend the flocks as thier great grandfathers did. They spend upwards of 6 months in the mountains and valleys with a traditional Basque Shepherds wagon, a couple of horses, a few good dogs and lots and lots of sheep. The earliest date carved that I could make out was 1963. The aspens grow quickly and the names are rapidly rendered unreadable. The shepherd in attendance this summer was visable across a broad expanse. His dogs seemed quite busy but the shepherd and his horse hardly moved except for the swish of a tail. I wanted to approach and talk to this man but was afraid of intruding upon what seemed a sureal thing that might suddenly disapear like waking in the middle of a precious dream.

Thanks, glad you like it. Yes I regret not stopping to speak to him also. I felt a bit like an intruder into a place uninvited.
