This was an odd shot. There’s a lookout platform overlooking Coomera Falls on this track at Binna Burra, unlike all the other waterfalls on this circuit (many of which you’ll have a short trek through overgrown bushes to get to them). Combined with the extreme angle, I literally had to balance my tripod over the railing to take my bracketed shots for this image, keeping it as still as possible. Worked okay, but was still a little windy hence the blurred branches and leaves that frame this image. My only wish is that I could’ve got a better angle for the shot had the platform not been there, or better yet, get to the bottom of the falls.. which I aim to do one day!

Shot on the 10th of October 2009 at about 6am with a 450d and a 17-40 f/4L lens at 35mm.

3 shots processed in photomatix.
Shutter: 0.5, 2, and 8 second exposures.
Aperture: f/16
ISO: 100

great work Jason, hope that was a good adventure to you! I can feel the height!

  • Thanks Dinni! Yeah looking over the railing could give you serious vertigo, this shot really doesn’t do it justice.

Great shot mate, looks a big ’en…

  • Yeah mate cheers, I think it was only about 70 feet, but the fact the lookout is higher above again probably makes it feel bigger.. though that’s still quite big. Cheers matey!

Nice one. Give us a bell when you plan to walk to the bottom of this – it’d be a good day out.

  • Cheers drec. Yeah I’ve heard there’s a “mystery track” that leaves the main circuit further back that goes to the very base of the falls. I read a newsletter for this SE QLD hiking group who did it, they said they had to use a rope to get down some sections and to get across some smaller waterfalls. I emailed them for some more info but never got a response, but will definitely let you know when I find some more out – be good to have a couple more people than just me there for this one!

I still really like this, despite the blurred branches. Looks a lot closer than it felt from the top, was definitely scary standing on that platform, especially when you could see straight through the slats! Pretty sharp considering how hard it was to shoot. Would be so so amazing to trek to the bottom one day. It’s a must! Also, I have a shot of you doing your funky tripid thing here :P

  • Haha I need to see that one! Yeah it was at 35mm so that’s why it’s closer, trying to cut out as much tree as possible.
