Embarkment To Oblivion by Jason Asher

Shortly after sunrise at Currumbin Beach, Gold Coast, QLD on the 22nd of August 2009. Awesome looking rocks at the northern end of the beach, a beautiful morning of photography it was. My last few submitted shots are of this same date and place and it’s probably the most enjoyable location I’ve shot yet.

3 bracketed exposures blended – .5, 1/4th and 1/8th of a second shots at f/14 and ISO 100. 450D with a Sigma 10-20. Post processing in Photoshop CS4.

This turned out so amazing! The sky is fantastic and the swirling foreground water and rocks are so sharp and colourful. Love it :)

Really love this! Gorgeous colours, drama and the composition is great! : )

  • Thanks Jenny, I wanted slightly more of an angle towards the right of the frame so it’d lead the eye out along the water more, but then I wouldn’t get that awesome sunrise detail.

HDR as I’ve seen and read about it would do no better in getting your value range, and done a lot worse in terms of hues and noise. For me there are two centres of interest which clash and distract. The swirling water in the lower right and the glorious sky colour on the top third. I would have picked one of them and dropped the value of the other. Both are excellent, but I do not think you can have both.

  • Thanks for your feedback re: composition. I see what you mean about the swirling water, I originally meant it to be standout as a means of drawing your eye up along the water to the side, though I can see how it’s a little distracting from the horizon. Thanks for your input, I appreciate the thoughts!

Hey Jason. I think this turned out great. I would maybe tone down the “sparkles” in the foreground rocks just a touch. I really like the dramatic light-path you’ve created with it. Your best work mate!

  • Cheers Stef, It’s really good to hear that from you mate. I see what you mean about the sparkles now, I’m not sure how to tackle it but I’ll give it a go. Cheers again for your always helpful suggestions :)

PS. “Embarkment to Oblivion” – hahaha. Nice title mate. I was almost scared to look.

  • Haha I’m starting to run out of ideas for these kind of shots, each one is more challenging than the last ;)
