Cheers Peter, really appreciate it mate – this is easily my best one yet.

  • Peter Martin

    Peter Martin 16 days ago

actually, that setup of yours sounds pretty damn good… have you measured on a ruler just how much magnification you are getting?

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Nah I haven’t tried any of that, not sure on the formula etc.

  • Peter Martin

    Peter Martin 16 days ago

I did a quick test: with 2×25mm tubes on the 70-300 IS USM gives at minimum focus distance, 9cms across a 36mm frame …= 1:2.5 which is almost 1:2 (50%)
what do you come up with with 68mm of tubes and same lens?

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Not sure mate, but I know I can have the front of the lens within 2-3cm of the subject and still get it in focus – but I can’t use the flash with this as the lens + tubes makes it so long that it blocks out the built-in flash on top of the body.

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

I should add so I probably need to be at least 20cm or so away from the subject so I don’t get a shadow from my lens being in the way of the flash. If I had an external flash held to the side, or no flash at all, I can get some serious magnification. Some good high iso performance would be EXCELLENT here, be able to do more flash-less work.

  • Peter Martin

    Peter Martin 16 days ago

    that thing must be huge!

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Sure is mate, it probably comes out about 30cm or more from the body, depending on how far the zoom is extended for “focus”.. haha!

It does look pretty ridiculous! Love this shot, such an awesome macro moment and you’ve captured it so well and so sharply! What a cool spider :)

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Took me a minute to figure out you meant it was the lens/macro setup that looks ridiculous, hehe :) Thanks bub, glad you like this – very happy with how it turned out.. I wish it was easier to get results like this with my monstrosity, haha.

Another great macro Jason!! Love the colors and those eyes are AWESOME!!! I don’t wanna rain on your touching moment… but I don’t think that’s a mama cradling her baby… it looks more like a female eating her mate…. eeek!

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Thanks Micci. But no I’m fairly certain it’s motherly love right there, I watched these 2 for a long time and she wasn’t eating anything. Also, the young one is another female too as the males facial colors/pattern differs from the females. Thank you again :)

  • Sharon Mau

    Sharon Mau 16 days ago

Really? So, they hop on you and then bite you?

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

Hasn’t happened to me, but I suppose it goes something like that – depends how aggressive they are, would have to intimidate them a bit I’d say.

  • Sharon Mau

    Sharon Mau 16 days ago

Okay, so I was trying to do the math with your “70-300 is usm telephoto and 68mm of stacked extension tubes” and I cannot figure it out…... :)) How close were you?

  • Jason Asher replied 16 days ago

For tihs one probably about 20cm away – I can actually focus on a subject at about 2-3cm away from the front element, but the length of the lens + tubes get’s in the way of the built-in flash I need to use for most shots since the tubes suck so much light away. If I the ring or twin lite flash setup I could get even better magnification. Not sure of the maths though, haven’t tried to work it out in numbers.

I did a test today, and it seems you are correct.
    1. the tubes nobble the zooming capability, but in order to get maximum working distance, you should have it at the 300 end (ie fully extended).
    2. the focus ring still works, but the effect is so gradual, you’d profess it was broken, but it does work.
    3. and you’re right, even with 50mm of tubes it becomes impossibly unweildy, but at least it’s got IS!!
    4. need to put on manual focus.

  • Jason Asher replied 15 days ago

Yep that’s exactly how it is, aswell as a huge drop in dof and light – but you knew that already. I must say, the IS is a huge lifesaver with this setup, and it works particularly well with this lens.

  • Jason Asher replied 15 days ago

Oh and also, I might add that on one or two occasions I have managed to use servo AF with this lens. The trick is that you still need to use the zoom ring as if manual focusing it as you normally would, but once you get it in reasonable focus range (and I mean very close to perfectly sharp) AF can SOMETIMES adjust it to optimal focus, under the right lighting.. that last part is the tricky one. Cheers again.

canon makes a cheap 270EX then all you need is an off shoe cable and some velcro strips and you’ve got your flash problem solved.

  • Jason Asher replied 15 days ago

Not a bad idea either mate, will keep it in mind.

  • Jason Asher replied 15 days ago

Not sure if it was even fully grown either, I remember the male being about 4cm long, I think.

Congrats on the features! Um, when you say largest jumper in Australia, exactly how big is it? It’s kinda creepy. Our jumping spiders here aren’t very big, maybe 1/2 inch or smaller.
    Great capture. . .

  • Jason Asher replied 14 days ago

Thanks! Yeah it’s still not too large, this one was probably only about 3cm long, but the male I shot (also in my gallery somewhere) was probably a bit bigger. I’ve only seen this spiders these 2 times, I get the feeling they might grow a little bigger than i’ve seen them, but the other jumpers we have aren’t too big at all. Thanks again :)

    G’day JASON!

    What a fantastic Jumper!!!!!
You have caught the details of the eyes and head markings perfectly.
Good depth, fine focus and a very good exposure have rendered a great arachnidian image.

seriously now.. is that the child or the mate (in danger of being eaten) ?

  • Jason Asher replied 10 days ago

It’s the child, they’re both females, the males have different markings. Also there wasn’t danger of being eaten.. I watched them for quite a while, and it really just looked like she was holding the little one close.

  • Peter Martin

    Peter Martin 9 days ago

totally amazing – spiders never cease to astound in terms of their varied behaviour across different genetic subgroups. There is a picture of a wolf spider (somewhere here on RB) that has a much resigned looking adult with thousands of babies clinging to its back for protection. It’s like crocodiles – so much reported violence, yet such attentive and protective parents.

  • Jason Asher replied 9 days ago

Indeed, and you can never believe it until you see it.. and even then you’re not so sure.
