Thanks to Andrew for identifying this as a Garden Orb Weaver. Appreciate it mate. These guys are apparently nocturnal feeders, and rest nearby their webs during the day. Bites can cause mild pain.

Shot on the 27th of October 2009 in Brisbane, Australia, with a Canon 450d and a 70-300 is usm telephoto with 68mm of stacked extension tubes.

Shutter: 1/50th (fired built-in flash +2)
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 200

Beautiful capture, love the lighting, not sure what it’s name is but I think I’ve seen them, aren’t they the ones that when they have babies they are all piled on her back…

  • Jason Asher replied

I’m not sure Josie, don’t think I’d seen one until this shot, all I know is that it made quite a haphazard web, and haven’t seen it since. Thanks :)

Awesome capture mate, looks like a garden orb weaver. Was it suspended in web?

  • Jason Asher replied

Yep it was, and upon searching that name I’m convinced you’re correct, thanks for helping me identify it! Appreciate it mate.

I love this shot! He seriously looks like he’s dancing. Love the simple dark background against his spikeyness :D

  • Jason Asher replied

Thanks, wish I had a shot of him on a leaf though, this seems pretty lifeless.
