what focal length did you end up using? 300mm? (ps very sharp – very curious)

  • Jason Asher replied

Actually there’s something I’m not sure about.. when I have all the tubes on, it seems like i’m at 300mm, and the tubes seem to stop zooming capability – i’m literally using the zoom ring as a focus ring.

tubes take away (sideways 8) infinity focus. for example with the 100mm and 50mms of tubes, infinity focus is at about 45cm from the lens. tubes with a zoom lens is tricky. in practice I’ve found set to maximum zoom (or if you have doubts about softness at the 300 end, then bring it in to 250 or 200), and set the focus to closest focus, set manual focus, then move in or out, leaving the focus ring alone. with the tubes, the gradations on the focus ring become very smooth, but the depth of field is very small, so to cut down on the number of things to worry about, just move in or out to get the focus.

  • Jason Asher replied

Yeah well thats what i’ve been doing more or less, though just using the zoom ring to focus, I’ll try and get as close to the subject as possible without my lens + tubes blocking out the flash – that’s the other problem you see, the telephoto plus 3 tubes is ridiculously long, and I have to be probablay at least 15-20cm or so away from the subject or i’ll shadow it out. So I do that, then use the zoom ring to focus – it actually makes no difference to the magnification, subject and details remain the same size..
