A New Tomorrow
Featured in Dimensions – November 2009
Featured in Light In The Darkness – August 2009
This one was taken on the 22nd of August 2009 from Elephant Rock at Currumbin beach – a sunrise no photograph can describe.
Shot using a 450D with a Sigma 10-20 at 10mm.
3 shots – 13s, 2.5s and 1s exposures using F/22 and Iso 100. Exposure blending using Photomatix and processed in CS4.
Big thanks to Stef Dunn for the loan of his Sigma lens for the day, and also to Shelley Warbrooke for doing a splendid job on keeping me awake for the drive!

Mate – this is a cracker. I’d love just a bit more saturation in the sky maybe … just to give it bit more wow factor. Well done!
Jason Asher replied
Cheers Stef, can’t be too bad if you approve – I’ll have a play with the sky and see how it goes.

Like that cloud in the sky and the little bit of green on the rock, nice work.
Jason Asher replied
Thanks mate, and for the favorite! Living on the gold coast you should get down there one morning you’d love it. Cheers.
Delany Dean
Excellent work! One of these days, I hope to get near the seashore, to try for some of these longer-exposure shots of water in motion…
Jason Asher replied
Thanks Delany – and for the favorite. You should definitely try and get to a coast sometime, be it sunrise or sunset – it’s beautiful… I had never seen anything like it, and this shot cannot portray what it was truly like.
Thanks for your interest in my work! I’m glad you like some of it :)
Rich Gale

Ian Robinson
Thanks for the comment on my picture. I must say of your work this is my favourite. I take it you have taken a bit of effort into getting the shot. These are the shots I like most.
Jason Asher replied
Cheers Ian! I gotta admit, the most effort this shot took was getting up for sunrise.. something I’m not too great at doing. This was the first position of that morning I started shooting at, I just walked up and the opportunity was more or less laid out for me, was just a matter of finding the more correct camera settings and processing the shots back home. Cheers mate!
Ian Robinson
I hear you….. but still there are still so many people still in bed. Cracking picture.
Jason Asher replied
Too true, cheers again mate.

Eivor Kuchta
Wonderful capture, perfect composition! Must have been a magical morning. The moment when the sun climbs over the horizon doesn’t last very long, but you got the best out of it. Well done!
Jason Asher replied
You got it, it sure was an incredibly morning. By FAR the most incredible sunrise i’ve witnessed. Thanks for checking out my work Eivor :)
Jason Connolly
A most excellent HDR shot, great scene, well done Jason…
Jason Asher replied
Hi Jason, cheers for the comment again mate! This isn’t actually a HDR, but a blending of exposures using a similar method. More or less just getting the best highlight detail from one shot, the best shadow detail from other shots etc, instead of getting that often overdone obviously-a-HDR look to it. Thanks again, cheers for looking :)
Jason Connolly
Cheers for that interesting info, might give that method a try mate..
Jason Asher replied
I think it’s really useful when you want to use multiple images but you don’t want that HDR look. There are tutorials to do it in photoshop, where you have more control, or there’s a function in Photomatix – if you’ve used that for HDR before, which does most of it for you. That’s what I used for this shot.
Jason Connolly
I have done loads of HDR mate, never used the exposure blending method though..I am half way through one now but am using the one shot and created several exposures from that.
Jason Asher replied
With a raw? Should be no worries mate, good luck. After you do the blend you’ll just need to tweak the levels a little to normalize things, eg I had to darken the sky in this one a tad as it was a little too light originally, not how it was when I shot it. Good luck.
Jason Connolly
Yes mate, with a Raw, you’ll see the results soon Jason.
willowsv
Amazing light and colors! Very beautiful work!
Jason Asher replied
Thanks so much, some of your macro shots are awesome, keep it up :)
Craig Shadbolt
Mate – you must have been thrilled with the way this turned out! Great sunrise shot and well worth getting out of bed for!
Jason Asher replied
Mate completely, we woke at 4am to drive down there, had only had about 2 hours sleep, but it was a pretty incredible sunrise, never seen anything like it.
Also, how is that.. as soon as you know you have to get up particularly early, your brain tells you not to sleep. Bloody convenient that is :D
Cheers for the comment Craig.
Bogdan Ciocsan
wonderful shot mate, great exposure, and a breathtaking view, Oz is surely a great to be in, with these lovely beaches :) im sure the drive was worth it :)
Btw, if i may ask, what-s your opinion on the 450D ? i-m thinking of getting one next month, and i would sure appreciate an honest review
Jason Asher replied
The 450D is excellent Bogdan. That said, this is my first DSLR – I cannot comment on any others, except for the 400D which the 450D preceeds. If you haven’t had an DSLR before I’d definitely suggest the 450D, perhaps the newer 500D if you like – but the extra 3MP aren’t worth it IMO.. the 450D has everything you need. What are you using at the moment?
Jason Asher replied
Also! Thanks for the favorite of this shot, I’m glad you like it – beautiful coastal areas here.
Bogdan Ciocsan
hmm i-m using a 350D (Rebel XT) which isnt much different from the 400d, a bit older, yeah, i dont care much about the MP, i just care about the way it measures light (i read that the 450d has spot metering, and that would be a great asset) and maybe for a less noisier pictures, my camera sure does produce a lot of noise, especially if im using more than one filter (ND)
Anyway thanks for the opinion, i appreciate it, and you-re most welcome, the shot is just great
Jason Asher replied
I was about to say, don’t skimp and get the 400D, because the 450D has spot metering – which is a HUGE help. I think it’s fine anyway, I’ve never used a 350, but have used a 400. The 450D screen is 3”, so it’s easily to see pics. It also has live view, though I can’t say I use it often. If I were you, I think the 450D is a great upgrade, especially with the price being lowered a little now the 500D has been out for a few months.
Cheers again Bogdan, happy shopping!
Mel Brackstone
A beautiful capture, Jason! I love Currumbin!

Jason, this is superb. I love how the lines draw you from the foreground to the rising sun. Just beautiful. Currumbin certainly has a lot to offer. I’ll make a point to visit my old stomping grounds the end of this year.

I think you definitely should Karen, easily the most enjoyable sunrise i’ve ever witnessed – I almost didn’t want to take shots it was that incredible.
Dave Johnson
Hi Jason. I think this is the best of the four. What time was the sunrise?
Jason Asher replied
Thanks Dave! I think so too mate, thanks for checking them out :) I beleive it was 6:24.. I could be mistaken, but I’m quite sure that was the exact time. We got up at 4am to make sure we got there in time to scope out the area and get set up which was LOTS of fun ;)

TFFDavid
What an absolutely stunning image.
I have shot hundreds and hundreds of sunsets, yet never shot a sunrise. When I do I wish I could shoot one as good as this Jason :-)
Jason Asher replied
Thanks David for the kind words! Mate you should try it, you’ll love it. I never imagined this would turn out so well, this was only my 2nd time ever shooting a sunrise. My advice is to find a great place, and get there a bit before sunrise so you can scope out the area and find the best shooting spots, that way you can get as many different perspectives in as possible once it starts rising!
Thanks again mate.

John Cocoris

Many thanks for checking it out John, glad you approve. :)
Daniel Fitzgerald
Great work, thanks for telling us how you did it too, you must have a really steady hand even to change the settings on the camera with the tripod. Looks fantastic!
Jason Asher replied
Cheers Daniel. I used auto exposure bracketing for this shit Daniel, a feature in most modern dslr’s these days, probably somewhere in yours too. Basically you can set your camera to take 3 shots on the one press of the shutter release, 1 with the the 0EV (normal/supposedly proper exposure) and one shot either side of 0, at a point of your choosing. You should see if you can do the same process with yours mate.
Daniel Fitzgerald
Yeah mine has that at the touch of a button on the camera frame itself but didnt think I could get such a long exposure. Will have another look at it tonight, going to head tot he jetty at sunset thanks to you.
Jason Asher replied
No worries mate, as with just about everything it comes down to light, of course a smaller aperture will enable you to make a longer exposure, hence why this sunrise was rather successfull. Good luck mate!
Anna Ellis
The horizon feels infinite, stunning image, very dynamic
Jason Asher replied
Thanks so much for checking it out, glad you like it :) Hope to see some of your work soon!
Ann Van Breemen
This is beautiful Jason. Love the dramatic sky and the comp and rock details are brilliant. I love this part of the coast. So many photo ops. I’ve just got to get myself up out of bed in time. I’m so lazy!!:)
Jason Asher replied
Thanks Ann, and I hear you about the getting up thing.. only done sunrise there once but it sure was worth it – I’m waiting for the sunrise times to be a little more agreeable again before I try again, bit of a further drive living in Brissie. Thanks again for looking :)
Ann Van Breemen
Yeah, Autumn should be good for that. I only live about 25 minutes away at Surfers, but I rarely go down there. I need someone to go with me to get motivated. Plus it’s scary down there in the dark by myself. (sob!) Actually, I’m really just very lazy.(lol)
Jason Asher replied
I know what you mean though, luckily my girlfriend is a fellow photog and we do alot of trips together. It can get pretty windy down there before sunrise too! Spend half the time shivering on the rocks.
Ann Van Breemen
Lucky you having a partner who shares your passion. My partner supports me and is proud of what I do but that’s as far as it goes. When I go out he stays in bed.:)
Jason Asher replied
Lucky bugger, not having to brave the winds! Yeah I sure am lucky, you can check out her profile here if you like. Thanks again Ann, enjoy your weekend.
