Self: exoneration of she

Nicole McBride

Maryborough, Australia

Artist's Description

There is no prince charming,
No lost and bemused distant royalty,
Defiant, Rebellious,
unbroken stallion of a dream
He has not sought you,
Through fevered nights
Musty with longing
He does not know your arched and eager form
Apart from all others,
He has not heard your silent cries
For rescue
For redemption
Salvation
He is a wilted lie
In a ridiculous fantasy
A soliloquy
Drowned by chorus.
You snow white
ate complicity
Feasted on excuses.
and
don’t need my platitudes,
My empty reassurance.
I will not pick you up
Like so many strewn apples,
Wasted, rotten opportunities
I will not try.
Neither prince,
nor charming,
I can tell you little
that you
brilliant, beautiful and shiny lady,
do not all ready know.

This piece explores the myth that women are taught to buy into, that happiness is reliant on finding the “perfect” man. It finds the truth; that we are entirely responsible for our own lives and no relationship can fix us, or fill a void where self love should be.
