Translucent is one image from a series called The Riders that was exhibited at The Centre for Creative Photography in Adelaide (March 2008), in 2009 at the Epson Gallery at Photographic Wholesalers in Hutt Street, Adelaide and again in March 2009 in Bellingen, NSW as part of the Sibling Rivalry show. I enjoy the transparency the motion blur has imparted on the riders in this image. There’s an almost Jellyfish quality too it. That the infrared film gives a blue cast to the road surface helps with that impression too.

The Riders series was shot at the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, South Australia.

The series were shot on Kodak color infrared film. See the full series.

The distinctive colours and grain are characteristic of the film. The motion blur was captured in-camera by using camera panning and slow shutter speeds – ranging between 1/15th and 1/2 second. A 28mm wide angle lens further added to the distortion and impression of speed. The camera was a vintage (early ’80s) Pentax K1000. Digital manipulation was limited to minor contrast correction and dust removal post scanning.

Cyclists make great target subjects for photography. Big motion in ths one!

  • Yeah. It’s one of the few professional sports where you can spectate within inches of the fast moving athletes.

Fantastic use of colour IR. I love this stuff, shame it is no longer available

  • Tell me about it. I have two more rolls in the fridge, and that’s it. Thanks for the comment.

I think we need to start a petition of EIR users to petition Kodak to start making it again- I’m Serious!
