A lot of work and very little sleep to get this one.

I got up at 03:30am, had two cups of coffee, packed up, got into the car and stormed away towards the mountains at 04:30am. After about an hour of driving (I missed a few turns) I finally found the car park and started the journey.

This peak is one of the smallest in the Mournes, I think it took me only 30 or 40 minutes to get to the top.

The sunrise was setting in very nice, so I quickly found a vantage point. I couldn’t get anything interesting by shooting a single frame, so I decided to go for a panoramic shot. This ended up being stitched from 12 vertical shots.

The production ended up being quite difficult. I shot 3 exposures for each frame, however only when I got home I realised the dynamic range of the scene was about 11 EV (a camera can only see 6EV). I ended up blending each frame from 6 files. So a total of 72 files went into this photograph and about and hour and a half of postproduction. Quite happy with the result in the end.

I also decided to keep my backback and photobag in the frame, as it gives the shot a bit more of a sense of scale. I removed it, but it just didn’t look the same.

Great panoramic mate! Though I’m sure most modern dslrs see about 9 stops not 6.

  • I’ll look it up. This would mean this image has an even higher dynamic range :) Thanks :)

Wow 72 files! Great move keeping the backpack in the frame. It really makes the shit and completes the story. Well done. Worth the trip.

  • Quite sure you were meant to write ‘shot’ instead of ‘shit’, however I think ‘makes the shit’ sounds much funnier :D
