Medieval Girl 2
Acrylic on Canvas, 540mm x 610mm (18” x 24”).

It took quite a few hours to paint. I converted the garage into a painting ‘studio’-but it was freezing inside-this is Scotland after all. Helped keep the acrylics fresh though.
Although I ‘helped’ some students before, this is my ‘third’ painting—that is done by myself. Hopefully I am getting better. It has been four months since I last touched a paintbrush, so took a while getting back into it.

cheetaah
You have captured so much details in this portrait, very well done, I loved the stage by stage, very clever, you’re a pro. xoxoxoxo
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Cheetaah. Yes, it was a lot of work. It is more of less finished, but I am still trying to get a decent photo of it.
I don’t think it looks the same on Redbubble as it does in real life.
It is dark early at the moment in Scotland, and inside lighting creates a gloss and tint.
Perhaps at the weekend.
Thanks for viewing
Rob
PERUGINA
Hi Robert,
You have uploaded 2 beautifully painted portraits here in your portfolio.
Medieval Girl 2 is a fine example of your skill. What is also interesting are your pictures showing your Work In Progress and thoughts.
Congratulations it is stunning!
What are your plans for her?
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks for your kind comments.
Plans?
It was to develop technique.
But a local art club, which I joined, is having an exhibition next week so I might put it on display there. http://www.dalgetybayartclub.com
After that…..
Laura Barber-R...
Wow!!!!! So, so good!!!!! Amazing
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Laura. Just been checking your gallery. So, I take this as a very big compliment
midnightdreamer
I love how you showed the whole process of this masterpiece, I have a thing for medieval art (and music)excellent portrait Robert!
Peace Always,
Leah ♥
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks a lot Leah. It was a lot of hard work, but I was happy with the result. In my opinion, the original is much better than I was able to photograph and upload. I took a lot of shots, but I could not get any of them to resemble exactly the canvas. I shall keep trying.
Kim Soltes
Fantastic work! I love all the info too!
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Kimber

ANNETTE HAGGER
how beautfiul…your so talented robert…...anna ; )
Robert O'Neill replied
Thank you so much Annette
Linda Callaghan
wonderful art…very interesting to see how you actually start a portrait and very helpful to us beginners who have never done one or who want to!!
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Linda. Using a grid seems to me the crucial way to start in a portrait. Half a mm out here or there and it seems completely distorted.
Ming Myaskovsky
Perfection!!!!!!!!!! :))))))))))))))) M&M
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Ming
Pamela B
Stunning work!
Robert O'Neill replied

genevievem
very impressive, again it was fascinating to see the process! I can never get anything as subtle as this in acrylics, it is so hot and dry that the paint dries as i put it on the canvas even using mediums!
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks again Genevieve for the view. yes, it is hard work trying to get acrylics smooth. I did this back in October/November. It was so cold (Scotland) in my garage that the acrylics stayed fresh for about four days—with medium. The Rose I just painted a few days ago. It was so cold that the first batch of acrylics I mixed up stayed fresh for two weeks!
I had a heater as well—but it was still freezing.
genevievem
I cant believe it , 4 days! Even in winter mine are dry in half an hour at most.
Robert O'Neill replied
That’s Scotland for you—freezing
Katy Breen

Lara Cooper
This is great Robert. Love seeing your process too. Have you tried painting without the drawing first? ie just going straight to the canvas and rough sketching with paint and slowly refining?
Robert O'Neill replied
Thanks Lara. No I haven’t tried to paint like that, but so many of the details got destroyed in painting the larger areas that much of the drawing was redundant and I had to paint the details directly.
I suppose an advantage of drawing details is that it works as a preliminary study, which is already in the mind for painting later. But I suppose it is not a very efficient/quick method of working.
Lara Cooper
I must admit, that because I usually have to draw everything (with watercolour you need those guides because you work so quickly) that with my one and only oil, I LOVED not having to draw and being able to do that refining work as I went. But, yes, you are right…the drawing process will never be waste of time.
