When a railway has single line working the train on the line must be in possession of “The Token.” Here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway A4 Pacific 60007, “Sir Nigel Gresley,” awaits the incoming train. The signalman is taking the Token from the fireman of Class 5, 76079 and will then pass it to the fireman of the other train so that it can get away up the single line.

Nice captue Ted, though I don’t suppose the A4s did much single line work in their day

  • Thanks for the comment. I guess you’re right. They tell me the A$ just plays with the stiff gradients on the NYMR. (Preservation Societies send their engines here for testing on the stiff 18 mile run.)

Beautiful shot Ted; I now know about tokens! That must go a long way back….Linda

  • It is the way of single line working since the 1800’s Linda. This was taken only last year. Still in operation on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Thank you for the comment. – Ted

Great capture Ted…There is a staff & token exchange on the preston to ormskirk line also..

  • Thanks for the comment Darren. It is widespread on most of the preserved lines as they are nearly all now single working. – Ted
