Quarry

We sometimes go climbing in the old abandoned quarries in the hills above Perth. These places, once noisy, dusty and now damaged beyond repair are little bits of high adventure for city folk who can be bothered to discover these ‘scars’.

I love them…in the morning when the sun hits those big western walls they just glow with the warmth, it feels so good to touch that rock, to caress it, to seduce it, to hold on for dear f&%$in life! Please, don’t reject me, don’t spit me off, hold me, baby…like snails journeying across pathways we leave our trail across the rock in the form of chalk dust, it keeps our hands dry and our arses on the rockface…good thing that, I hate falling, I love chalk dust :)

As the day lengthens the quarry becomes an oven, the sun traverses overhead and bakes everything within cooee…nothing moves except the cicada legs of the males, playing their tune against their wings, serenading the babe cicadas, hoping, just hoping to get lucky…

We hide amongst the rocks, under the trees and spruik bullshit to each other until the warm air gently sends us to sleep, the silence is deafening in it’s completeness, the smell of the bush is perfume, god i love these places…

Summer is here, let the good times roll :)

Hmmm.. I like the piece, and I love the words. I have mixed feelings about some of the viewpoints, because I always hated the places where the scars were, but the rest .. lovely!

  • Kim Grace replied

Scars need love too, they are there in spite of our personal environmental ethos, therefore they deserve our respect and awe because the vandals have opened the chest of the World and exposed her heart and it is a beautiful thing in its own way :)

  • Arletta

    Arletta

mmm .. no.. not “no, you are wrong” but “no, I won’t do it” I love old roads, that have developed large cracks due to the trees that are now growing through them, and the grass and the flowers … because that’s reclamation and that’s beautiful.

I prefer scars that are healing, and being used for something other than greed, than the fresh ones, though, if that helps you any.

  • Kim Grace replied

    arletta, i agree…i think :)

I just really love your work Kim. You seriously need to look into doing prints! I absolutely adore the vibrant colours in this image and the shapes and the lines are amazing. I find it so hard to believe that you have only been doing this since September and that you are colour blind. Your work is just really brilliant in more ways than one :) You are so incredibly talented :)

  • Kim Grace replied

Prints??? What the blazes are they, canuck friend? Thank you, you are making me blush which is not a good look in front of 15 other hairy men on a rig :P

  • Shelly Hiebert

    Shelly Hiebert

Prints are copies of your original. It would be great if you could sell these as posters, cards, matted prints etc. to help you pay for some new paints :D (Sorry to make you blush in front of all those hairy guys!) Hope you are well Kim :)

  • Kim Grace replied

I see , but i do not have a very good camera, i can’t even get the mongel pictures straight, hon, it drives me mental, and the colours are all wrong, the origionals are much brighter than this pic…and what if no one buys them shock horror, the pain would be too great, the humiliation too yucky…i think i prefer to put em up here and maybe sell an original if i can (don’t hold yer breath tho :) I am well, Shell, pouring with rain out here at the mo, dolphins are hiding but it is all cool :0 Take care, canucker
