05-19-09 – my front LAWN! Compton, Illinois, USA

Yep – you read correctly…this is a Robin’s nest IN THE LAWN. I have never, in my 60 years, seen Robin’s do this. A few years back, they built on one of my porch chairs, then last year in the porch soffit, but THIS was somewhat of a surprise.
I kept seeing this one Robin sitting in the exact same spot on my lawn every evening – never gave it a 2nd thought. As I drove past on our road the other day, however, I noticed something moving where she sat and found…These l’il guys. HOW the hell they survived my landscaper is a total mystery – he must have mowed over them at least twice! Let alone, the coyotes, raccoons, cats, etc.
Anyway…at least one of the babies survived – he/she has been hopping all over my property, “test-flapping” the past 2 days.
I now have 5 ground-nesters on my property: Robins, Meadowlarks, Kildeer, Quail and Pheasants.

Update: 2011…This nest is now the home of 2 l’il Kildeer.

Most of my photos are – more or less – sootc. I’ll tweak contrast and brightness on a few, or convert to sepia or B&W, but aside from that, it’s usually just straightening and cropping. I do have fun with a few pix, but that’s rare for me. I use an old Fuji E550 FinePix P&S, exclusively.

awwww!! couldn’t they find any trees to build in that’s so sad
    but it’s a gorgeous photo!!

  • Thanks, Catherine!
I’m convinced this one pair just doesn’t like heights! First year I was there, they built in the porch soffit, then on a wood porch chair and now this. Subterranean next year is my guess! :-p
