Like a Rolling Stone

I was reading this magazine featuring wonderful 2d artists and I was so inspired by there beautiful freehanded work. So I went on searching on the internet for a portrait photo with lots of character and found this photo of Rolling Stones gitarist Keith Richards. So I set up his portrait with pencil and started blocking in the shadows and highlights in gray tones and usually I don’t get much futher than that because it always looks like crap but somehow I got the motivation to move on and started to add color and texture and the painting just exploded. It is turning out so well I cannot believe I did it myself. My drawing skills from way way back seem to come back to me YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHH ;-)

Now this well and truly Rocks…. Great Portrait… I am not really into fols painting celebs because it´s been done so many times but this fellow I have met and this is one great painting….His hand looks a little weird mind you….must be all them riffs… :)

maybe a hint or tow of some rings on those fingers would solve that problem though

Well I´ll Be it´s Jack SParrows Daddy! Instant Fav Odwin!

WHat app do you work in??? I presume Painter looking at this.

If you have photoshop you can do all the foundation work as follows:

    Take your photo… duplicate it

Ctrl + J to copy the layer on the dupe – and apply Filters > Other > HIgh äss with a valiue or vetween 5 and 10
Next fo to Image >Adjust>threshold and play with the sliders till you get what you are afjter,,,

Now create a layer direcly above the background and fill it with an off grey (I tend to favour grrenish/yellowish greys….)

Go back up to your threshold layer…and select it
Go to Select > Color Range and select the whites (or the highlights)
    Delete them…

Now lower the opacity of your grey layer a bit to se your original..

    Create a new layer above this and start blocking in some of those shadowd and highlights… }}

When satidfied bring back up the opacity ofyour greay lñayer and flatten the image… you are left with your original photo in one document and your base painting in the other…

and you can open the base in Painter and go wild!!!

I never used to use line work myself in Painter but I have used thiis technique in SHop for other kinds of stuff. It jsust dawwned on me one day that hey I use lines in Oils so why not in painter…

    Try it!!!

    Ahoy!

That is one extremely well rendered piece of art. Great portrait of Keith. I wonder if you could manage a group image of the Stones together.

This is seriously good. All you need to do is track down his agent and maybe get a signed copy sent to him.
