If anyone knows about the history of this place please feel free to correct me.

This is one of the rooms in the old school situated in Phnom Phen that imprisoned many of the Cambodians during that horrible era in history- I think most of the schools were turned into prisons.

Location: Phnom Phen, Cambodia

it’s a great image, it has character…it’s hard to believe that it was a prison, that wasn’t my first impression at all….so very sad the history

  • yeah I know-I hate putting nice pictures in but then adding the sad history behind it, but that was the reality so…yeah.

Very effective shot – appropriate use of colour given the history of the location.

This looks very much like ‘S-21’ in Phnom Penh?

S-21 was used an interrogation and sorting centre prior to victims’ transfer to the ‘killing fields’. I visited last year – it is a truly sobering experience. Your image looks like one of the solitary confinement and interrogation cells.

  • Thanks for the info David!

This is a superb image of a truly horrible and chilling place.
The box you can see on the bed contained torture instruments, and to the left you can make out the leg shackles which were used to keep the inmates chained to the ‘bed’, in reality just a metal frame. People were kept in these cells for varying periods of time, until they were either tortured or starved to death there at the centre, or taken to one of the many killing fields, where they were usually bludgeoned to death in front of an open pit, and then buried. Bullets cost money.
This is not ancient history, folks, this happened only 30 years ago!

  • Yeah I couldn’t stay in the room for long- enough to take a picture. Also went to the killing fields to see what happened there- it was so peaceful and nice there- hard to imagine that such horror occured in a place like that!

masterful work of art … that it is the scene of so much horror is such a tragedy … that you had the courage to stay and attempt to capture it is a testament to your dedication. Yes, I’m old enough to remember hearing about all of this in the news. Not ancient history at all. Congratulations on your feature in Photog 101!!!

  • Hey Lois- Thank you for your comment- it does make you feel uncomfortable touring these kind of places, but I guess it’s a way to remember what happend and not forget that human lives were mistreated- shame it still happens in other parts of the world though!
