A personal criticism of the suffocating culture of Consumer Capitalism.

Consumer capitalism is a theoretical economic and political condition in which consumer demand is manipulated, in a deliberate and coordinated way, on a very large scale, through mass-marketing techniques, to the advantage of sellers.

The pursuit of profit has created an increase in consumption and waste that we simply cannot cope with. Corporate culture is coercing and moulding the human instincts of fear and greed, compromising the very planet we live on. Its health, people and future are being suffocated in the relentless grab for every available dollar.
Consumer culture is so deeply interwoven into our lives that it has begun to affect our behaviour as a race and even our health. Products and appliances detrimental to our health have been fully accepted into society and endorsed by our governments who refuse to control consumption of tobacco and alcohol for fear of the loss of tax revenue.
Children grow obese on a diet of manipulated ‘foodstuffs’ and video games, exposing themselves to ill-health and images beyond their years. Appliances are updated, upgraded and renewed with alarming frequency and the mountains of waste keep rising. We queue for the latest iphone 6 months after we bought the last one. We throw away tonnes of food while over half of the worlds population lives in poverty. A pursuit of material gain and physical wealth has led societies worldwide to accept consumerism as part of life, ignoring its negative effects on their own lives including ill-health, crime, exploitation , slavery and child labour.
McDonalds, Nike and Gap have all undertaken such socially unacceptable practices in order to take your next dollar. Yet we remain faithful to them.
If we dont slow down and take better care of ourselves, our societies and our planet, it will be too late. What use will the dollars and the profits be then?

Im not overly politically minded and certainly dont succumb to fundamental solutions. This is simply something I feel strongly about and just a personal expression of that concern.
