    yes, I read it somewhere that the strength our instinct for self preservation is matched by equally strong drive for self destruction
    on societal level we do not discuss the dark side for the sake of keeping things pretty, I guess, but the dark side is always there
    I suppose that’s when quotes like the one of Camus comes to mind which said something about the heroism of continuing to live despite being aware of the absurdity of life
    I would also like to think that ‘to live’ is not meant in the sense of living without a life but living creatively – even through rough patches
    your works make one connect to these feelings and musings

  • Well, Anna, what a great comment. I know what Camus meant. A lot of his words seem to fit alongside my works, well, in my opinion anyway. I do feel that the ‘darker’ side is almost taboo in society and its acceptance is seen somehow as negative and almost failure of life and self. I feel it makes for a far more interesting subject matter and encourages an honesty in the artist that helps conveyance in the work and helps the viewer to connect far easier on a basic human and emotional level. An equally fitting quote would be that from Rothko;
    ‘We assert that the subject is crucial and only that subject matter is valid which is tragic and timeless.’

    Thank you for such a kind and considered comment.
