As a very young child I had, like many other children, an imaginary friend. I remember very little of this, save for one instance and one fact: he had a red coat. The image of his coat has stayed in my mind always and was brought to the fore recently when studying symbolism in cinema. The colour red in cinema has always had connotations of danger and has been used to draw attention to pivotal instances and characters. Uses in Schindlers List, Dont Look Now and The Sixth Sense highlight the psychological effects the colour has on our psyche and perception. The red coat has intrigued me in this sense. It has always been a symbol of comfort for me, following the theory that imaginary friends act as guardians or tuetelaries for children and in some way help them to make sense of the adult world.
