The Menindee Lakes System begins on the Darling River about 200 kilometres upstream from the junction of the Darling and Murray rivers at Wentworth.
There are four main lakes, Lake Menindee, Lake Cawndilla, Lake Pamamaroo, and Lake Wetherell created from a series of natural depressions that filled during floods.
The Menindee Lakes and Darling River were a lifeline for early explorers and it was thought the Darling would provide a means to develop Australia’s interior. The flows of the river proved to be unreliable causing difficulties with navigation and water supply and the idea of using the Menindee Lakes for water conservation was born in the late 1890s. Today the lakes and dams create a welcome water haven in the arid Outback landscape as well as a bird-watchers paradise where bird watching tours are highly recommended.

Fantanstic colour sense and very imaginative style of art portrayed over here…loved those wine tones blended with those deep emotions of setting sun lights…..great mood painted Sue..!!!
Sue Hodge replied
Thank you Shree,
Recently I entered the original in a major landscape competition. the painting was rejected as it was too abstract for them – the colours that is. Funny thing is, we actually have these colours in the sunsets at certain times of the year around Menindee and Broken Hill. I guess the judges have never been past the mid-west of New South Wales. The Australian Outback is a magnificent and glorious place.

Awee…...dont you worry Sue for those competition rejections as my paintings have been rejected for many time without any reason but than its not your loss its their loss so just dont bother about anybody as being a painter i just go with my heart and paint what i feel will make others worth viewing, as you will find all sorts of people just ignore them if they dont like, but dont stop what you are doing as this is the best of yours and we surely want more from you..!!!!!
