Bon Odori Lanterns Afloat on Lake by

Bon Odori is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed spirits of one’s ancestors. This Buddhist festival has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people from cities return to their home towns, where they visit and clean their ancestors’ graves. The festival traditionally includes dancing and the floating of paper lanterns to guide the spirits in their journey (called Toro Nagashi). At this ceremony, prayers were written on the luminaries, which were then set afloat in the lake. Photographed on Capitol Lake, Olympia, Washington, USA – 18 August 2007

I’m a Pacific Northwest based photographer. Favorite subjects include the magnificent nature of Cascadia, scenes from worldwide travel, and macros of small, small things. I also shoot portraits and real estate / architectural images.
